The Cenotes (say-NOH-tays) are magical, enigmatic natural wonders found in the Yucatan. They are a network of crystal clear pools of water unique in the world and were once the only resource for fresh, sweet water in the local Yucatecan jungle. The Mayans consider these pools to be gifts of the gods, their sacred water source. They were the sacred places of the Maya not only for that reason, but also because they represented the entrance to the underworld. There are over 3000 cenotes, with only 1400 actually studied and registered.
Because these pools were gateways to the other world, valuable items were thrown into them. Many Golden sacrificial artifacts have been found. Many more are belived to be waiting to be discovered.
Ancient ceramic and precious stone pieces have also been found in cenotes, suggesting that ceremonial offerings were made to them. Some are found great distances away from cenote openings, hinting of the subterranean world that existed before the passageways flooded as the sea settled near its present level some 16,000 years ago.
